Florida Metropolitan University began its venture into online learning in the winter quarter of 1999 by offering five courses on two campuses. After our initial pilot phase, FMU expanded its online course offerings to include all nine FMU campuses for the winter quarter of 2000. At the same time we received approval to develop for online enrollment any of the courses within the standardized Business Administration program. In the Fall of 2001, additional approval was granted to offer the Accounting and Criminal Justice programs. Since winter term 2000, FMU has consistently added courses within these Associate and Bachelor's degrees and today all of the courses necessary to complete the degrees are available online which now includes Master's programs.

Lakeland lies between Orlando and Tampa on what is called the I-4 corridor. Florida Metropolitan University at Lakeland operates in a spacious facility that houses two computer labs, a medical assisting lab, and a keyboarding lab.
